El Jadida, previously known as Mazagan, is a historical city of Morocco. It was controlled by the Portuguese from 1502 to 1769. The city was destroyed by the Portuguese upon their forced departure. It was then taken by the Moroccan ultan Mohammed Ben Abdellah in 1769 and remained uninhabited, it was nicknamed Al-Mahdouma (The destroyed or ruined). It’s Sultan Abderrahman who ordred the city to be rebuit and restaured. He then named it “El Jadida” (The Newest).
