A walk to discover Marrakech hidden treasures and Souks, definetly the most colorful and lively in Africa, where professions are grouped : the Dyers’ Souk, the Blacksmiths’ Souk, the Babouchiers’ Souk, the cloth’s Souk, the spices’ Souk, etc…
The tour starts in a local district with the elements inherent to life :
First the public oven, where cedar and lemon sawdust are still used to give the bread its special flavour. Then the famous hammam, inspired by the ancient Roman baths. Then we move to discover the furnace, working as a hammam’s engine as it supplies it with hot water and continuous heat, but also as a cooking chamber that provides us with the typical Moroccan bread and other dishes too such as the very famous Tangia – a dish simply described as the best façon to make the juiciest most delicious lamb.
The culmination of the tour happens at Djemaa El Fna Square, where storytellers, animal trainers, vendors of “gris-gris” and folk medicines, Gnaoua dancers descended from former Guinean slaves and… tooth pullers perform every late afternoon, giving this square a vibe you will never see elsewhere.

9:20 AM - Marrakech Intimate Tour
Every Medina neighborhood has five things: a Mosque, a school, a public bath, a fountain, and a public bakery. These bakeries are a great tradition: if you see crowds of men, women and children balancing boards on their heads with piles of dough, chances are you’ve spotted one. All day, customers stream in and out, and the baker carefully placed their mounds of shaped dough in the great oven with a long wooden paddle. Twenty minutes later they return to pick up their steaming gold bread. Public bakeries have been part of the fabric of the community in such places for thousands of years. Once they could be found all over Morocco; now, with the proliferation of home baking and supermarket bread, they are disappearing. But not in Marrakech. Head to one of these bakeries and enjoy some of Morocco’s carb-heavy staples. Khobz are the trademark, round, crusty load; Harcha is made from pan-fried semolina; Rghaif is a flakey, layered flat bread; and Baghira is really rather like a crumpet. Other places to visit today are the furnace and the caranaveserais known also as Fondouks, generally built in a square around a large courtyard, the Fondouk have been used in the past to store goods, to shelter pack animals and mounts, and to accommodate merchants and travelers. The Fondouks are essential buildings in the life of the inhabitants of the Medina. They are vast houses organized around a central courtyard, lined on the first floor with workshops, stables for camels and rooms upstairs. They are places of exchange between the craftsmen and the foreigners who gathered there. In the Middle Ages, they characterized the caravan route that linked Saharan Africa to southern Morocco. The Fondouks were gradually replaced by private houses and warehouses as traders became more sedentary and prosperous. Nowadays, these buildings are turned into museums, art galleries or Souks (Local markets).
2:00 PM - Lunch time
Enjoy a hearty lunch in one of the Moroccan restaurants in the Medina.
3:00 PM - Visit the Secret Garden and Souks
After that you will have the chance to visit Le Jardin Secret (The Secret Garden of Marrakech), it’s a private garden located in the heart of the Medina of Marrakech. The origins of the complex date back to the time of the Saadian dynasty, over four hundred years ago. Rebuilt in the mid-nineteenth century by an influential Atlas Caïd, the Secret Garden has been home to some of the highest political figures in Morocco and Marrakech. The Secret Garden, which can be fully appreciated today thanks to its recent restoration, is part of the great tradition of Arab-Andalusian and Moroccan palaces. Visitors can discover the gardens and buildings that make up the garden, which are exceptional examples of Islamic art and architecture. The remaining time will be devoted to the discovery of the Souks (Local markets) with their many enticing shops where you can buy some local souvenirs. Drop off at the riad after the end of the tour.
