This day trip will take you to some of the most beautiful and historic places in Morocco. Meknes, founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids as a military camp, this city became the capital of Morocco during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismaïl (1672-1727), founder of the Alaouite dynasty. Moulay Ismaïl turned Meknes into an impressive city of Hispano-Moorish style surrounded it by high ramparts pierced with monumental gates which today shows the harmonious alliance of Islamic and European styles in the Maghreb of the 17 century. Volubilis, capital of Mauretania (the old name of Morocco), it was founded in the 3rd century BC. AD and was the most important outpost of the Roman Empire. Volubilis was adorned with many beautiful monuments that still exist today. The city was to become later, for a brief period, the capital of Idriss 1st, founder of the Idrissides dynasty, buried not far from there, in Moulay Idriss.
